Moses Willey was born deep in the heart of the Great North Woods, high on the peak of a musical note. This is the place where mists of traditional Bluegrass, Folk, and Appalachian notes bend and blend genres into something special.
The 2016 self-titled album, Moses Willey that featured six original songs written by Michael Lee Hicks established them as an Inland Northwest musical force. They have received both U.S. recognition plus air play in Europe.
Most band members contribute their songs to the musical mist. The 2017 addition of musician/songwriter Matt Renner (Fiddle/ Vocals) to the core of Michael Lee Hicks (Mandolin Vocals) and Clayton Lee (Guitar /Vocals) have expanded the quality and variety of Moses Willey’s songwriting. With founding members Don Saladin (Banjo) and Tony Farris (Bass) all the original music is served up with an energetic and traditional rhythm foundation.
Tunes are built from life experiences. “Letters to Juliette” is based on letters Michael Lee’s Grandfather wrote to his Grandmother during the depression. In “I Was Born a Traveling Man” Matt Renner describes his experiences of growing up traveling the United States with his father in a covered wagon.
Michael Hicks, and Clayton Lee have written some great songs together. One of their first projects co-writing together “Miners Last Prayer” is based on a story of a coal shovel Michael’s Grandfather kept in his living room. Hick’s vocals are powerful and potent as the groove pulls us into a vision of coal miners, and fatherly cautions for his son to stay out of the mines of West Virginia. “Red Clay” is a poignant song about life, written after the passing of Michael Lee’s father. The whimsical “Bluegrass Zombies” and “Harrison” a historically based song detailing the events of the Harrison ID fire of 1917, complete the foundation for Moses Willey’s next album.
